Design and Operations Report - Low Carbon Fuel Initiative

Thermal energy is required to produce cement – a product much in demand for its building material qualities and its superior environmental performance in its forms and applications. Traditionally, this thermal energy is obtained from fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and petroleum and its by-products; consequently these fuels are also carbon intensive. The cement industry globally accounts for approximately 5% of the world’s anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
