ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative Demonstration Component Final Report

The Low Carbon Fuel Demonstration Pilot Plant was an innovative project successfully conducted at the Lafarge Bath Cement Plant, west of Kingston, Ontario. It has led to many successor projects and greatly advanced the adoption of Low Carbon Fuels by the cement industry. It was the start of the largest demonstration work of its kind globally in carrying out comprehensive before and after emission testing of a wide variety of fuel types, coupled with life cycle assessments and other studies.

The project successfully demonstrated the use of Low Carbon Fuels as an alternative source of fuel in cement plant kiln operations and produced methods to be used to quantify greenhouse gas savings in post-Pilot operations. Assuming a net carbon intensity of the annual blend of lower carbon fuels used as half that of petcoke and coal and further assuming an annual replacement of 30% of the Bath Cement plant’s fossil fuels, the petcoke and coal use, will yield an annual savings of approxi...
